The 61st National awards for Indian films are being announced today. Tamil films have received a good number of awards.
Thangameenkal directed by Ram has received the Best Regional Film award. Baby Sadhana who acted in one of the central characters in the film has received the Best Child Artiste award for her performance in her debut film.
Lyricist Na.Muthukumar will be receiving his first National award for his song 'Ananda Yazhai Meettugirai' that was included in the film. In all Thangameenkal which was one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year 2013 has received three National awards.
Apart from Thangameenkal, Balu Mahendra's last film Thalaimuraigal prouduced by Sasikumar under his Company Productions banner has won the award for Best film for stressing the importance of National integration.
Vallinam, the sports thriller directed by Arivazhagan has won the National award for Best Editing, Editor Sabu will be receiving the award.

The National award for Best Feature film goes to critically acclaimed film Ship of Theseus. Bollywood film Bhag Milkha Bhag which was a biopic on Olympic Gold medal winning athlete Milkha Singh receives the award for Best film for providing overall entertainment
Best Actor award will be shared by Rajkumar Rao for his performance in Hindi film 'Shahid' and Suraj Venjaramoodu for his performance in Malayalam film Perariyathavar. Hansal Mehta the direcfor of 'Shahid' has been named as the Best Director.
The Best actress award goes to Geethanjali Thapa for her performance in the film 'Liar's Dice'.
Saurabh Shukla for his performance in 'Jolly LLB' and Aida Elkashaf for her performance in Ship of Theseus have been named as Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress respectively.
Bengali film Jaatishwar has won five National awards under Best Make Up, Best Costume Design, Best Music and Best Male Playback Singer categories Veteran Lyricist, Poet and director Gulzar has been named as the recipient of the prestigious Dada Sahib Phalke award.
